Aromatherapy and Hayfever

The sun has made an appearance recently and along with it came the dreaded pollen watch! If you suffer with hayfever, Spring and Summer can be a time of suffering.  Hayfever is an allergic reaction to various airborne substances and it can affect people in different ways. However, common symptoms are:

  • Blocked or Runny Nose
  • Sneezing
  • Itchy eyes
  • Itchy throat mouth and nose and ears
  • Loss of smell

Aromatherapy can help ease the symptoms of Hayfever as unfortunately, there is no cure for it.

The following oils are useful for all allergies because they are soothing, anti-allergenic and have decongestant properties.

Chamomile, Lavender, Peppermint, Rosemary, Juniper, Eucalyptus, Lemon, Geranium and Tea tree.

Lavender and Eucalyptus combined and used in inhalations can help reduce sneezing and runny nose.  Add a few drops of the blend to your diffuser or even add them to a carrier and drop onto a tissue to inhale. Peppermint essential oil is known to reduce inflammation, so it is great for a blocked nose and sinuses. You will be able to breathe easier by diffusing the oil or even applying it on your skin after it is diluted with a carrier oil. Combining peppermint with lavender and lemon oils creates an effective and soothing allergy relief combination as well.

Massaging the sides of the nose, forehead, temples and the back of the neck with a blend of oils in a carrier also brings soothing comfort for many sufferers. A gentle massaging action around the nose really helps to soothe those streaming eyes and mucous membranes

You can also use Essential oils in a body cream or oil, so that when you apply this as a moisturiser in the morning you will also be getting the benefits of a hay fever treatment too.

If one of your symptoms is itchy, sore, red eyes, please do not use essential oils on them!  Cool compress using rose water is very soothing. Spray some rose water onto a cotton pad and place over closed eyes. Relax for a few minutes and the rose water will help reduce redness, itchiness and soothe the eye area.
