What is a carrier oil?
Carrier oils are used to dilute essential oils and “carry” them to your skin. As essential oils are potent and can cause irritation when applied directly to your skin, a carrier is needed. Most carrier oils are unscented or lightly scented and don’t interfere with an essential oil’s therapeutic properties. They may be used alone or with other oils to nourish your skin. I love using a blend of carriers in my products and I know which ones will work well together.
There are many different types of carrier oil, but the ones I would use most as they can be used for all skin types and are very absorbent are Rosehip Oil, Grapeseed Oil, Apricot Oil, Avocado Oil, Jojoba Oil, Coconut Oil, Olive Oil and Argan Oil. I also use Sweet Almond Oil and Macadamia Oil but if you have a nut allergy, you should avoid these oils.
Carrier oils make it possible to use essential oils safely. They also help nourish and moisturise your skin. You can also use Creams, Lotions, Shampoos or Salts to “carry” the essential oils to your skin. Be careful which you choose if you are creating something yourself as not all carriers will absorb the essential oils and you could be left with a product that could do more harm than good.
