How to use Aromatherapy for Depression

Depression can take many forms and can be caused by different reasons.  There are many antidepressant Essential Oils available to help you through this difficult time.  (if using Essential oils, please do not stop taking any medication you may have been prescribed).

Depending on the type of symptoms you have, there are different oils that can help you and many ways to use the oils. Whether you choose to have an Aromatherapy Massage or to inhale the aroma from a product or diffuser, is entirely is up to you. You will still be able to benefit from its effects either way.

Here are some of the oils that can help you:

  • Bergamot
  • Chamomile
  • Clary Sage
  • Geranium
  • Lavender
  • Orange
  • Rose
  • Sandalwood
  • Ylang Ylang

If the form of depression you are suffering from is making you feel lethargic, an oil that is uplifting and energising like Bergamot or Orange would be recommended.  If you are looking to lift your mood, Bergamot, Geranium and Rose will help. If you are anxious and cannot sleep, Lavender, Bergamot, Clary Sage, Chamomile, Sandalwood and Ylang Ylang are the oils to use in that circumstance.

Always speak to a qualified aromatherapist before using oils. A blend of oils is usually better than just one oil as they will work with each other to benefit you more.  Please do not use Essential Oils neat on the skin, they must ALWAYS be diluted in a carrier before use.
