Ease Arthritis symptoms with Aromatherapy

Arthritis and Essential Oilsarthritis

Essential oils can be used to treat arthritis symptoms. 

You can massage diluted essential oil to the affected area lightly. Make sure the oils you use are blended in a carrier oil or a cream before using directly on your skin.

Aromatherapy treatment for arthritis aims to improve joint movement and eliminate pain and swelling.  Depending on the type and severity of your arthritis, you may experience a number of physical symptoms. These can include:

  • pain
  • stiffness
  • tenderness
  • swelling
  • fatigue

 

There are Essential Oils available for all of the above symptoms,

Frankincense:  Frankincense has been used for thousands of years to treat a wide variety of ailments, including chronic pain and inflammation.  According to the Arthritis Foundation (www.arthritis.org) the acids in frankincense have anti-inflammatory and analgesic properties.

Lavender: Lavender is a great painkilling oil and has long been used to reduce all forms of pain and also reduce anxiety and depression, which can occur if you are suffering from chronic pain. BEST AVOIDED IN THE FIRST TRIMESTER OF PREGANCY

Eucalyptus: Eucalyptus can help to reduce inflammation, swelling, and pain. . DO NOT USE EUCALYPTUS IF YOU HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE OR ARE EPILEPTIC.

Ginger: Ginger is a warming oil. It can help if you are suffering from inflammation and pain, warming the joints and helping with mobility.

Marjoram: Marjoram oil has been traditionally used for treating sprains, muscle spasm, and stiff joints, making it great for relieving arthritic pain. DO NOT USE MARJORAM IF YOU ARE PREGNANT

Rosemary: Rosemary has been shown to reduce the pain and inflammation of arthritis; it works well blended with Frankincense. DO NOT USE ROSEMARY IF YOU ARE PREGNANT, HAVE HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE OR ARE EPILEPTIC.

Citrus Oils: Oils like Orange, Grapefruit, Mandarin, Lime and Lemon can help boost your energy levels if you are feeling fatigued from the pain. 

Carrier Oils to use that will also help reduce pain and inflammation are Olive Oil, Castor Oil and Coconut Oil.
